Kitchen Remodeling - Choosing Materials

The kitchen has evolved from the standard oak cabinets and Formica countertops to a modern showplace with commercial grade appliances and exotic stone countertops. The days of the extreme 'over-the-top' kitchen remodel may be gone, but that still doesn't change the fact that the kitchen is one of the hardest working rooms in the house. Choosing durable yet attractive finishes is still extremely important, but it shouldn't break the bank. Here are some tips on choosing materials for your kitchen, including how to get a high end look without spending a ton of money.

One tip when choosing cabinets is to look at the interior door style in your house (the doors to each room, such as a bedroom). Often times choosing a coordinating cabinet door style to match the interior doors within your house is an easy and safe way to ensure that the new kitchen design looks good. Of course, you can deviate this. Consider choosing a different material for an island and maybe a more elaborate doors style. Don't make the mistake of selecting an overly fancy door style unless your house warrants it. You don't want your friends to come into your kitchen and say, "wow, look at your fancy cabinets!" You want them to say, "wow, look at your amazing kitchen!" You want them to notice everything. If you have kids and pets, consider choosing a stained wood cabinet rather than a painted cabinet. Generally they will end up looking better for longer, and they are easier to touch up when they get nicked. If you are consider a faux or decorative finish, keep in mind that when you are looking at a sample painted on one door, you'll generally want it to look less distressed than you think it should look rather than over distressed. When you install all the kitchen doors, it can look very 'over done' if you go too heavy handed on faux or decorative finishes.Often the first thing I consider for flooring choices are the same materials on the floor of adjacent spaces. If there are hardwoods in nearby rooms, a good solution can be to extend the wood into the kitchen. This is especially true in a smaller room, where continuing the same flooring material will usually make a space look larger. If you do not want wood floors in the kitchen, then choose a tile that is a similar color value to the adjacent wood floor, so the transition is not harsh and it does not separate the space. A resilient material like cork can be an excellent choice for the kitchen as it is slightly soft underfoot and is more forgiving if you drop a dish on it. Natural materials like Marmoleum are also great and a good 'green' choice. How to Select Backsplash MaterialsOther new choices are countertops made with glass, paper, and concrete. Many of these are fine for kitchen use, but some will not be durable enough over time. If you are using a material that is not time tested inspect an installation that has been in use for some time..For some reason the backsplash is often the hardest material choice for people to decide upon. But the backsplash is one area that can have a big visual impact and help tie the design together. If you're having trouble choosing a material for the backsplash, look to the other surfaces in the kitchen for inspiration. In a more contemporary kitchen, choosing a stainless steel backsplash that matches your stainless steel appliances can be a wise decision. For a less expensive choice, consider plastic laminates that look like stainless steel that can even be installed by a do-it-yourselfer (but resist the temptation to use these on countertops because many are not rated for horizontal surface use). Glass tile can be another good choice to tie together different color materials. There are so many different glass tiles available today it can be challenging to choose one. A safe place to start is by choosing a glass tile that pulls colors from your countertop. Other material you may consider are sheets of glass, plastic laminate, stone tile, ceramic tile, or even wood (painted or sealed, of course).Natural stone counters are also a common choice and a visit to your local stone yard will show you that there are literally hundreds to select from. To help you find a suitable stone more quickly, ask for help looking for stone only within a certain price range and color range. When you find a stone you like try to take a sample home and see how it holds up to spilled wine, ketchup, mustard and oils. Beware of stones with a lot of fillers. Fillers are a sign of lower quality stone and can get damaged more easily and even fall out.For middle-of-the road budgets look into solid surface materials such as Corian. These materials have evolved well beyond the basic white, and are now available in patterns that look more like stone. A big benefit of solid surface countertops is the ability to have a seamless integrated sink fabricated into the countertop. So wiping water into the sink and cleaning up is quicker. How to Choose Cabinet MaterialsChoosing the Right CountertopsAnother newer countertop option is Quartz. Quartz countertops turn a natural material, quartz, into slabs that appear almost like natural stone. One of the many benefits of these countertops is that they do not absorb liquids spilled on them. There are many countertop materials to choose from, many people simply just don't know where to start. There is also a sizable price range even within one material (such as stone). For an affordable option consider plastic laminates such as Formica. There are some sophisticated patterns and colors available today that when paired with a tile backsplash and well selected paint colors can look very good together. There are also new edge details that eliminate seams that can get damaged. How to Select Flooring

While choosing materials for the kitchen can be difficult, take it step by step and you'll get there. Start with the countertop and cabinet finish. Once you have those chosen, select a material for your floor. Then choose your backsplash and wall and ceiling paint colors. This process will help you get everything chosen more quickly, so you can get through the construction a little sooner, and then to enjoying your new kitchen.

Crystal like granite countertops and spa type bathrooms built with natural stone are all the rage in home interiors, but not surprisingly it will lose its investment value fast if not properly maintained.

Lighting Can Be Both Functional And Beautiful

Lighting performs many functions within a home. It provides ambiance and helps to set a mood. It eases your eyestrain if you are working on a hobby, reading or studying. Lighting also helps to define areas in a home. A beautiful light fixture can be a stunning focal point. Outdoor lighting discourages burglars and provides a sense of safety and security. Given the number of functions that lighting performs, it is extremely important not to let your lighting solutions become an afterthought during your home renovations.

Your cabinets will, of course, be installed before your new countertops. In fact, until your cabinets are installed, they can't even start work on your countertops if you have chosen granite or Silestone (or other stone) countertops because they need to make a template. Ask for temporary countertops and a sink to be installed so that you aren't eating out the entire time you're waiting for your countertops to be cut. It might take weeks. You'll want to do some research even at this early stage. What kinds of materials will you want to use for countertops? Granite is hugely popular, as is Silestone, which is made from natural quartz and comes in a huge range of colors. What kind of wood do you want for your cabinets, and how light or dark should they be? What about flooring? Then you have to consider which appliances will need to be replaced, how you want the room painted, lighting and any major changes in the layout of your kitchen.Graceful pendant lights are becoming a more popular choice these days. An electrician can easily switch the old dated fluorescent fixture for sleek, modern pendant lights lending a whole new updated look to your kitchen. The shades for pendant lights can also be easily changed out down the road if you decide that you want to change the look.* Lighting is everything. Bright cheery baths flooded with light will perk up anyone's spirit!Another common update that many homeowners make today is to replace the lighting over a kitchen island. Many houses were built with a large fluorescent light over the island. Fluorescent lights can flicker and the glow that they put out is not flattering to most skin tones. But something else factors in to the equation here. She's on the fence about whether to stay in her home or sell. Her husband passed a couple of years ago and she's now faced with a decision as to whether or not she wants to continue living in this spacious home, or is it time for her to move.

Lighting can be both functional and beautiful. If you are picking out lighting fixtures for a new house, or renovating an older one, it's important to talk to your electrical contractor. He or she will be able to assist you in your planning and make sure that you get the most for your budget.

Renovating Your Master Bath For Maximum Profit

When you live in a home long enough, eventually some neglected areas will beg to be repaired, upgraded or completely remodeled - the basic wear and tear of the property. I met with a woman this week who had uncovered some mold in her master bath and since she's now faced with correcting that problem, feels it would be the right time to finally update and gut her tired and very dated master bath.

Adding a ceiling fan is another option for homeowners. Ceiling fans come in a wide range of styles and finishes to compliment any decor. They can be installed indoors in a room or outdoors on a porch. A ceiling fan circulates the air and helps you to feel cooler. It is also a great addition to a baby's room. In fact, a study by the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine found that a fan in a baby's room reduced the rate of SIDS by up to 72%.Lighting is especially important if you are modernizing your home for a more updated look. Replacing tired, old fixtures with sleek and modern recessed lighting can add instant value to a room. Recessed lighting is unobtrusive, letting your furnishings and accessories take center stage. An electrical contractor or electrician can also install recessed lighting in a large room to eliminate dark, shadowy corners. This will make the room seem much more inviting and welcoming. When the time comes to place your order, make sure your measurements are very, very accurate or you will have a terrible time with your kitchen remodel. You can have professionals come out and do the measurements for you. In fact, if you are having your cabinets and countertops professionally installed, you WILL have professionals out taking measurements. If your measurements are accepted by the store without question and without sending out their own people, you will probably want to shop elsewhere. You're spending too much money on remodeling your kitchen to take that kind of chance.Make sure your sketches include dimensions. Whether you're doing it yourself or hiring professionals, accurate dimensions will help you plan well and give the best feel a paper sketch can give for how your kitchen will look.Lighting can be both functional and beautiful. If you are picking out lighting fixtures for a new house, or renovating an older one, it's important to talk to your electrical contractor. He or she will be able to assist you in your planning and make sure that you get the most for your budget.* Be aware that homes are typically purchased on emotions and the reality is when it comes to many home improvements - women tend to be the nesters and the ones that will be most impressed with the kitchen and bath designs.Appliances such as stoves and refrigerators can be installed whenever convenient. As most dishwashers are installed beneath the countertops, you'll want to ask about the best time to replace your dishwasher.Whether you ultimately decide to stay or move, plan for a well-designed bathroom renovation which includes high quality materials and finishes. If the space appeals to you, it will more than likely appeal to the potential buyer as well. And that's more cash in your pocket. Many home improvement stores will have kitchen designers on their staffs, and this is a resource you should take advantage of. They'll go over your plans with you and possibly have ideas you haven't considered. For this reason alone, every conscientious parent should consider adding a ceiling fan to their newborn's room. As a side benefit, many babies sleep better with the soft whir of a fan in the background. Older children will appreciate task lighting for studying, or lighting that can be easily dimmed for watching movies or gaming.

Whether you ultimately decide to stay or move, plan for a well-designed bathroom renovation which includes high quality materials and finishes. If the space appeals to you, it will more than likely appeal to the potential buyer as well. And that's more cash in your pocket.

Basic Kitchen Remodeling Planning

There are some basic steps you need to take when you decide to remodel your kitchen. Here I will present to you a quick overview of what you need to do when remodeling your kitchen; you will find more details throughout this website.

So when considering a bathroom remodel of this kind it's imperative to resist the urge to spend money on expensive fixtures, fittings and flashy trends that won't appeal to the demographic you or your agent will be targeting.* Don't over design the space for the current market - at the same time give it a special touch with accessories.Perhaps the most important aspect of planning your kitchen remodel. This is one of the most inconvenient rooms to remodel, so you'll want to do it at a time when you will have the time and patience to deal with it. Your kitchen will be marginally useable for weeks during the remodel. However, the beauty of your new kitchen should more than make up for the inconvenience.Generally speaking, you will want your refrigerator, stove and sink to form a triangle in your kitchen. Include plenty of walking space and room for eating. Will you want an island in your kitchen or will that just be in the way? How will the table fit? You'll also want to look at where outlets are, keeping in mind where you plan on placing your appliances. You may have to move outlets or plumbing if you're rearranging your layout. Don't forget to consider installing extra outlets. The first step is, of course, deciding on your goals for the kitchen. What do you want your remodel to accomplish for you?Homeowners can also put the finishing touches on a kitchen renovation with tasteful under-cabinet lighting. This type of lighting is also practical because it illuminates the work surface, a must-have if you love to cook and bake. It also highlights those quartz or granite countertops that are so popular today.Obviously she'll want to spend her money wisely - and in this particular situation a new master bath design should appeal not only to her, but the potential buyer as well. Now you will want to start sketching out your ideas. You don't need to be a great artist; just get some graph paper, pen or pencil and a ruler and start mapping things out. Of course, if you are more technologically inclined, you can do this on the computer as well if you have the right software.Of course, there's one more very important goal for you to consider - your budget! How much will you want to spend? Will you want to get a home equity loan for your remodel or have you saved money up for this project?* Know your buyer and renovate with that demographic in mind.

Perhaps the most important aspect of planning your kitchen remodel. This is one of the most inconvenient rooms to remodel, so you'll want to do it at a time when you will have the time and patience to deal with it. Your kitchen will be marginally useable for weeks during the remodel. However, the beauty of your new kitchen should more than make up for the inconvenience.

COUNTER Culture

The hottest neu countertop trends include fresh ond clean color schemes, eco-friendly options, durable materials and the addition of texture - both visual and tactile.

With smaller-scale remodels growing in popularity, consumers are looking for affordable yet visible ways to update their kitchens. And changing out the countertops offers an upgrade that combines powerful aesthetic appeal with strong functional benefits. Manufacturers have responded to this demand with choices that mix visual appeal, ease of maintenance, green sensibilities and value.Neutrals are in demand now more than ever. Of the neutrals, Herreth believes gray is on top. "It is so versatile; a cool gray can resemble concrete in a modern application and a warm gray can generate warmth in a traditional setting," she says."Gray has become the new beige," Kath adds. With the two factories, LG will become the only company producing both acrylic solid surface and quartz surfacing materials in North America, company officials said. For some consumers, it's all about keeping up to date with the latest fashions, and for others it's about having something classic and timeless. "Right now, we definitely see a strong continuing trend for whites, grays and blacks," says Ed Rogers. "These color trends go hand-in-hand with the desire to have clean lines in the kitchen and bath."Lisa Herreth, product designer at Hanwha Surfaces, in Atlanta, GA, believes that countertops are going to become even more exciting in terms of texture and color. "We're going to see them stand out as a design element rather than blend in," she says. "Exotic patterns are going to be making a debut."Not that a granite countertop doesn't need any care, it does. But with just a minimal amount of proper care, any granite countertop will maintain the sparkle and shine that it had when you chose the slab from the supplier.McGeehan also noted the trend toward material mixing at KBIS. "We saw high-design installations that were not just the traditional Corian and Zodiaq, but wood integrated into a kitchen island along with Corian countertops," she says. "We believe that consumers have many good options for surfacing, and mixing it up allows them to personalize their space."The program, known as "Exploring New Dimensions," was crafted to support retail partners' growth by providing marketing and merchandising tools that include sample displays, showroom countertops and cooperative advertising, company officials said.LEAN AND GREENMandell reports that Samsung Staron has seen a recent surge in white and black countertops, often paired with the opposite color in cabinets to provide a striking color contrast. "Because of the increased popularity in quartz, surfaces that offer natural, earthy colors are also in demand," he says.Textures aside, consumers are looking for products that will not only improve the look of their home, but also provide good value. "Stone is generally the most preferred look, but quartz is regarded as the best value because it has the stone look that everyone likes, but does not require any maintenance," says Summer Kath, director of brand for Cambria USA, in Eden Prairie, MN.Simple, clean and bright, kitchens employing white counters offer a crisp look ideal for food preparation, McGeehan agrees. "A white kitchen can go many routes - modern, beach-inspired, farmhouse - it's a blank canvas for clearly translating a homeowner's vision."Granite needs to be sealed annually. Although it's a highly polished stone, it is still porous, and those pours need to be kept sealed. Sealing the granite helps it resist stains and keep its shine. Sealers can be applied by anyone, since no special skill is required. You can always call a local granite shop to do this work if you prefer, but either way, mark you calendar and get it done each year. Some manufacturers, such as Samsung Staron, offer Quartz products that are comprised of 93% mined natural quartz crystals and 7% fillers and polymers. The result is an engineered surface that looks natural, but is consistent in look across slabs, according to Dale Mandell, director of sales - Surfacing Products for Samsung Staron, in La Mirada, CA. "This is important when you're trying to match an island to an outlying countertop area," Mandell notes. "And the surface of quartz has also been proven to be harder than granite."While aesthetics and value matter, homeowners are also looking for surfaces that keep the environment in mind. Herreth explains: "I think in the future, people will move away from countertops made exclusively from finite sources."Granite is also extremely stain resistant and durable. It stands up to acids and other harsh elements commonly found in any 'cooks' kitchen. This means less upkeep and care are additional benefits to the kitchen owner."The hottest trends in countertops at the moment are fashion-driven textures and colors," says Ed Rogers, director of business development for CaesarStone USA, in Van Nuys, CA. CaesarStone recently launched a line called Motivo, which comes in both Lace and Crocodile patterns. "This is definitely on trend for fall/winter," he says. "These patterns are right off the runway."Mainstream countertop buyers continue to look for neutral colors that fit best with their existing cabinets, flooring and wall colors, according to James Rogers. For solid surface, he feels patterns with larger particulates or more variation in colors and patterns are growing in demand, but still with colors that are more neutral. "The same can be said for quartz, although the looks in demand are those that match closely to popular granite stones in the warmer browns, tans and beiges," he reports.WHITE HOT"Now consumers can have the look and feel of natural materials with the benefits of manmade advancements like no need to seal, repairability and manufacturer warranties," he says.Registered dealers ordering LG Hausys countertops through the program can also earn points towards reward merchandise and incentives, the company added."Our CaesarStone international R&D team, with its pulse on the latest in trends, determined that 'white is the new black,' and is the hot new color choice," says Arik Tendler, president of CaesarStone. One of the biggest problems you can face with all countertop materials is grit or sand. Any object you place on your countertop might have some grit stuck to the bottom. A cooler from the garage, or even a glass of ice-tea from the patio table could contain abrasive grit underneath - grit that can dig in and scratch even your granite quartz given the worst circumstances.Granite is so easy to clean, and annual sealing is a breeze. But there are some things to be considered when caring for your kitchen granite countertops. And granite countertops are impervious to kitchen heat. Imagine taking a boiling-over pot of water from the stove to settle, and you place it on the Formica counter top - Oops, you could have discoloration or even a burn mark. Even if you're more careful than that, other household members might not be.Consumers are also looking for surfaces that are more functional, manufacturers agree. "As consumers increasingly dine in, they are selecting surfaces that [simplify] food preparation and are integrating knife slots, a secondary prep sink and waste holes to increase the function of the surface," says Denise Grothouse, owner of The Grothouse Lumber Company in Germansville, PA.Even the pickiest of consumers can find a granite countertop pattern, color and texture that will compliment their kitchen decor, making for a kitchen they will love for ever, until the day they move on.True there are some manufacturers of products that claim to repair scratches or blemishes from granite, but consider this - A slab of stone with a scratch means that some of the material has been removed. How can any miracle product put stone back? They can't. They can hide it if it's not too bad, but your only real defense is to be diligent and prevent scratches before they happen.

While aesthetics and value matter, homeowners are also looking for surfaces that keep the environment in mind. Herreth explains: "I think in the future, people will move away from countertops made exclusively from finite sources."

Dealer Support Effort Launched by LG Hausys

Atlanta - LG Hausys America, the Atlanta-based supplier of acrylic solid surface and quartz surfaces, has launched a new "Authorized Dealer Program," aimed at boosting the sales of retail customers, the company announced.

As the market has seen vast changes, so, too has the role of countertops. Texture is now a hot trend; the ever-popular granite is increasingly sharing the stage with quartz, solid surface, glass and wood; splashy colors are ceding to monochromatic hues, and eco-friendly products continue to grow in popularity. This is not to say that monochromatic colors are the only hot colors, says Tom Costello of MS International in Orange, CA. "Our number one selling color is dark green," he points out. "And I believe it's primarily because it is one of the most affordable choices and it works in many kitchen color combinations."According to the manufacturers interviewed by KBDN, countertops with texture are the next big thing.

With the two factories, LG will become the only company producing both acrylic solid surface and quartz surfacing materials in North America, company officials said.

Kitchen Granite Countertop Cleaning

Among many home owners and contractors, granite is the countertop material considered the best choice. Its easy care and cleaning make it extremely versatile, And its natural beauty is unmatched by manufactured materials.

"We're seeing that consumers, particularly in Europe, are gearing towards surfaces with texture, such as the Volcano Finish," says Lorenzo Marquez, v.pymarketing for Cosentino North America, in Stafford, TX.Countertops, like many aspects of a home's dcor, are a very personal decision, so it's important to offer a range of style and color options. This year, monochromatic colors are hot, while navy adds a splash of color. Both quartz and solid surface satisfy these demands, agrees James Rogers, residential marketing director, Surfaces Division, LG Hausys America, in Atlanta, GA. He notes that "hard and shiny" has emerged as the hottest trend in recent years.Rogers believes that color and pattern can only take a manufacturer so far, and sees a movement toward more interesting textures than what are traditionally found in hard surface materials. "We are investing heavily into developing new textures that turn the countertop from not simply a visual expression, but a multi-sensory experience that will now include touch," he says. And it's gorgeous! The countless colors and patterns can make it difficult to choose just one. Many samples have large clear crystals that give a depth and texture unmatched. The color textures mix with the depth textures to make a canvas you can stare at all day long, and constantly find new features.Ed Rogers states that summer's hottest color was definitely navy, and anything aquatic inspired. "Colors such as our Deep Ocean, which is a rich navy, work in any design application," he says.James Rogers notes that solid surface manufacturing has also stepped up to produce clear-chip technology, which replicates the look of natural minerals as well as colors and patterns that vary and have directional movement, similar to natural stone.ON THE SURFACETo summarize, granite is the most beautiful, durable, and versatile countertop material on the market. Brand new, it's sparkle will draw the attention of everyone you invite into your home. But fail to care for it, and the shine will eventually dissolve into a dull boring surface that can never be repaired. So do seal your granite each year, never use ammonia based cleaners, and try to be aware of anything that might have grit that can scratch.Imagine that horrible sound of a scratch being formed as you innocently slide something from here to there, the sound that tells you - oops it's too late, it's already done.LG Hausys America also announced that, by the end of the first quarter of 2011, the company will have a fully-operational facility outside of Atlanta, dedicated solely to the production of its Viatera Quartz Surfaces. LG already has a manufacturing plant nearby which produces its HI-MACS acrylic solid surface.

Home Building - Bathroom - Bathroom Countertops

When it comes to bathroom countertops theres no limit to how creative you can be, because most countertops are custom-designed for each installation. There are hundreds of colors, patterns, and materials to choose from, but not all of them work well in the bathroom where water and condensation are a constant concern. Your best choices are marble, granite, ceramic or porcelain tiles, solid surface materials and laminate surfacing.

tacking the tile creates a very interesting modern vibe. Stay away from the common square tile in any size.Composite Stone is the hot new surface when it comes to tops and a big rival to granite. It is a stone-synthetic composite made of about 90 percent quartz particles and 10 percent acrylic or epoxy binder. Some of the composites look like natural stone, but not one that you could identify. Others are so close to real granite that you're left wondering if its real or not? Since the composites are man-made materials, they do not have the unexpected variation of granite or marble and they do not need to be sealed. The four major choices - Silestone, Okite, CaesarStone and DuPont's Zodiaq - all use the same process. The only differences between them for the end users are the colors and textures offered. Taken together, the four companies offer more than 130 countertop choices. Cost is between $110 to $250 a linear foot, installedThe joint venture officially kicked off at Culinarium 2010, the kitchen design and epicurean event sponsored recently by the San Francisco Design Center (SFDC)."It's our goal to always bring our clientele the best in design that's organic to what we do," added Lane Brooks, creative director at Christopher Peacock. "We're excited to introduce the options of ECO and Silestone to our showrooms. The durable, functional and aesthetic properties of both products, and the environmentally friendly properties of ECO, give our clients a wonderful choice for their homes and our designers another arrow in their quiver."5. Accessories - Remember to keep clutter and display to a minimum. - Accessorize with towels in a bright color for punch or stainless steel and woods. Keep everything to a minimum and clutter free. - Select chrome, nickel or silver toned drawer/door pulls, towel bars, towel hooks and paper holders for sparkle. - Frame vanity mirrors in woods or silver tones - in similar finishes to the other accessories adorning your modern bath.

Wood is attractive and versatile, but it is very vulnerable to water damage and its porosity makes it hard to clean - especially in the bathroom. If you have to have a wood top in your bathroom be sure its well sealed with polyurethane or marine varnish. Note: extra care should be taken to seal around the edges of plumbing fixtures so standing water can't seep in and cause wood rot. Cost is between $25 and $40 a linear foot, installed.

Alliance Links Cosentino, Christopher Peacock

New York - Cosentino, the Stafford, TX-based supplier of natural stone, quartz and recycled surfaces, has formed an alliance with premium home dcor brand Christopher Peacock Home.

Plastic Laminate is the most common and least expensive countertop material, by a considerable margin and is available in just about any color and texture you can imagine. The four major manufacturers - Wilsonart, Formica, Nevamar and Pionite -each offer more than a hundred colors and patterns. The latest rage is having your plastic laminate custom-designed to your own color, texture and style, but be prepared to spend a few bucks here. Laminate is a breeze to clean because of its smooth surface. Cost is between $25 and $50 per linear foot, installed.4. Luxurious Shower - Create a steam shower with multiple rain heads, and body sprays. If your budget allows, add chromatherapy and aromatherapy to your master bath wish list as well. These fittings represent the epitome of modern luxury design. Don't forget a built in bench and access panel to hide the steam system. - Design a full seamless glass enclosure from floor to ceiling and finish the interior with complimentary mosaics or stone tile to set it apart from the rest of the space. This glass enclosure creates a more visually open space within the overall space.Corian and Solid Surfacing is made of either a pure acrylic product or a polyester-acrylic mix. The most widely available and widely known 100 percent synthetic countertop material is Corian by Dupont, but other manufacturers including Wilsonart, Formica and Avenite also make it in a wide range of colors and textures. Some of the materials are solid colors, but most have flecks that give it a textured look that resembles real stone (that will run the cost up). Cost is between $75 to $150 a linear foot, installed.Ceramic & Porcelain Tile is probably the most versatile material that you can use on your countertop to create a specific style or look. Contemporary, retro, traditional, rustic, country, and everything in-between is possible when working with ceramic tile. The only drawback to using tile is the grout lines, because nobody wants to invest the time and energy necessary to keep grout clean, especially in the bathroom. And dont be fooled - tile grout requires regular maintenance and lots of elbow grease. On the flip side, the tile itself is easy to clean. Cost is between $50 to $80 per linear foot, installed. Plain-colored tiles cost from $2 to $40 per tile with hand-painted tiles running from $5 to $75.According to Marquez, Culinarium 2010 "will be the rst of many joint projects for Cosentino and Christopher Peacock." Culinarium 2010, aimed at homeowners and trade professionals, consisted of keynote speakers from the interior design world, panel discussions, cooking demonstrations, and designer and chef competitions.

Proceeds from the event provided scholarships to Bay Area interior design students, Cosentino said.

5 Modern Bathroom Design Ideas

Would you say your overall design style sleek and chic? Do you enjoy the true architecture of a space with its linear simplicity rather that an overly adorned and accessorized space? If you'd like to translate your modern vision into your Master Bath here are a few design ideas to help get you started.

3. Surfaces and Materials - Utilize solid surfaces for countertops, whether quartz, limestone, granite, concrete or glass to give it a clean contemporary look. Keep the edges simple and square for easy maintenance and sophisticated style. - Always introduce an interesting backsplash material in contrast to the counter top color and material. Whatever the surface I like to apply it on all walls from floor to ceiling. It creates instant architecture and adds great detail and drama to the space. - Glass tile, mosaic, stone or ceramic details are just a few of the highly decorative backsplash products out on the market today that create a sense of modern style. - Keep geometry in mind when selecting the material for your contemporary backsplash. Consider tile shapes that are rectangular, oversized, or small mosaics to create detail in the pattern of the application. If the tile is oversized and rectilinear install it in a brick pattern. If it's shape is longer and thinner then s!Wood is attractive and versatile, but it is very vulnerable to water damage and its porosity makes it hard to clean - especially in the bathroom. If you have to have a wood top in your bathroom be sure its well sealed with polyurethane or marine varnish. Note: extra care should be taken to seal around the edges of plumbing fixtures so standing water can't seep in and cause wood rot. Cost is between $25 and $40 a linear foot, installed.Granite slabs are the most expensive of all countertop surfaces, but this is one product that holds its weight. The expense of granite will vary greatly, depending on the type, quality and availability of granite that you select, as well as the finished edge that you choose. If you just cant resist the look of granite and your purse is stretched, try going for granite tiles. Cost is between $75 to $200 a linear foot, installed.1. Cabinetry - When it comes time to selecting the design of your cabinetry lean toward clean, crisp and streamlined furniture. - To create a lighter and sleek bathroom environment consider cantilevered cabinetry secured to the wall creating a minimal look to the vanity piece. Create some drama with strip lighting added to the bottom side of the cabinet - which will cast a warm glow to the floor below. - Provide additional built in wall-to-wall storage elsewhere in the bathroom to compensate for the reduced storage in the vanity area. - Deep dark rich woods evoke a sense of warmth to the clean lines of contemporary design.Proceeds from the event provided scholarships to Bay Area interior design students, Cosentino said.Under the terms of the alliance, two of Cosentino's leading countertop product lines, Silestone and ECO by Cosentino, are available for purchase at Christopher Peacock showrooms nationwide.

Draw the bath and enjoy the modern luxuries of your new space.

Eco-Chic Materials For Your Home Renovation

Earth Day was last week, and whether you're ready to save the planet, or simply practice more eco-friendly habits it's easier than ever to implement green and sustainable products into your home renovation projects.

How to Choose Cabinet MaterialsCAMBRIA is a stain resistant, nonporous surface that is harder, stronger and easier to care for than other stone surfaces because it does not require sealing with chemical-based conditioners, polishers or wax. CAMBRIA is also certified by NSF International as safe for use as a food preparation surface - there is no safer surface available to consumers.Cork is not only sustainable and renewable (like bamboo), but is extremely soft and comfortable under foot.Other new choices are countertops made with glass, paper, and concrete. Many of these are fine for kitchen use, but some will not be durable enough over time. If you are using a material that is not time tested inspect an installation that has been in use for some time..Concrete countertops are increasingly popular in contemporary settings, and don't off-gas. They are considered greenest when locally fabricated and when mixed with cement alternatives and recycled aggregates.Wood is a wonderful material for butcher-block counter tops and flooring.FlooringFSC and sustainable woods that are formaldehyde free - and finished with a low VOC sealant - is a green alternative to recycling your old cabinets. Another wonderful material to consider is a veneered wheat board composite. The straw fibers are combined with a formaldehyde free resin and then painted with low or zero VOC paints.Kitchen cabinetry can easily be refaced or repainted with low or zero VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) paints and products. If however they no longer fit into your renovation plans then consider re-using them somewhere else in your home or donate them to you local Habitat For Humanity Re-Store.SOURCE Kitchen Magic, Inc.CAMBRIA's colors possess unrivaled movement, depth and veining that no other stone countertop has been able to capture. Plus, CAMBRIA is the most durable stone product on the market and it is nonporous so it won't stain and requires no maintenance, polishing or regular sealing unlike granite. For information, visit KitchenMagic.com/countertops/CAMBRIA or call 800-237-0799Choosing the Right CountertopsHere are just a few material considerations for you to research before you get started on your kitchen or bath renovation. Educate yourself on all the available green and sustainable products available today, as they will provide you with a greener home and a much healthier lifestyle. When you install all the kitchen doors, it can look very 'over done' if you go too heavy handed on faux or decorative finishes.

Finally when it comes to the finishing touches and furnishing your home, look for environmentally sustainable and eco-chic pieces. Do some online research and you'll find the resources are endless.

Solid core passage doors are also available in wheat straw and FSC certified woods. They too are formaldehyde free and meet LEED guidelines. For some reason the backsplash is often the hardest material choice for people to decide upon. Fillers are a sign of lower quality stone and can get damaged more easily and even fall out.Kitchen Magic was founded in Allentown Pennsylvania in 1979 by Jost and Reine Fleck. Today Kitchen Magic continues to be family owned and operated, now in the second generation, and is the largest specialty refacing and kitchen and bath remodeling company in the Northeast, serving NJ, PA, NY, CT, MA, NH, DE & RI. Kitchen Magic's headquarters and manufacturing operations are located in Nazareth, PA, and the 'Kitchen Magic family' is comprised of over two hundred and fifty employees.Often the first thing I consider for flooring choices are the same materials on the floor of adjacent spaces. How to Select Flooring"CAMBRIA clicked for us from the beginning," said Kitchen Magic President, Brett Bacho. "Both Kitchen Magic and CAMBRIA are family owned businesses, both American manufacturers and both stand behind our products with Lifetime Warranties, so we are very excited to partner with them." He added, "Our customers have told us they feel the CAMBRIA colors are superior to any other surfaces they've seen. They love the beautiful depth and unique movement of the colors."For middle-of-the road budgets look into solid surface materials such as Corian. These materials have evolved well beyond the basic white, and are now available in patterns that look more like stone. A big benefit of solid surface countertops is the ability to have a seamless integrated sink fabricated into the countertop. So wiping water into the sink and cleaning up is quicker.CabinetryThere are many countertop materials to choose from, many people simply just don't know where to start. There is also a sizable price range even within one material (such as stone). For an affordable option consider plastic laminates such as Formica. There are some sophisticated patterns and colors available today that when paired with a tile backsplash and well selected paint colors can look very good together. There are also new edge details that eliminate seams that can get damaged.NAZARETH, Pa., July 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Kitchen Magic, the Northeast's largest kitchen cabinet refacing and remodeling company announces the addition of CAMBRIA quartz countertop surfaces to its repertoire of countertop products.Another newer countertop option is Quartz. Quartz countertops turn a natural material, quartz, into slabs that appear almost like natural stone. One of the many benefits of these countertops is that they do not absorb liquids spilled on them.
